Kathryn began working in public relations a number of years ago which involved doing promotions for many different companies. As part of this she was fortunate enough to be chosen as the face of ‘Brand Belfast’, appear in TV adverts and gain work as an extra in some films.
After a conversation with a friend regarding an article in a magazine “how to find Real Happiness – Remember your childhood” She realised that back in her childhood – Radio was a big interest. “When I was a kid I loved to tape the Top 40 chart on a Sunday afternoon and talk up the songs like Dr. Fox!” (then presenter of the chart show).
“This, together with the fact that I have ever since had a huge interest in music, made me think that radio may be something I would enjoy.” She said.
Like most jobs – the best way to succeed is gain experience. Initially Kathryn was lucky enough to get a job behind the scenes at Cool FM working as a producer on some of the weekend shows. At this stage though there was no opportunity for on air work as she had no experience (the usual snag when looking for work). For this, however, she decided to go knocking on doors and was lucky enough to get some opportunities on community radio.
Kathryn was also known as “DJ Kitz” on Belfast’s Community Radio station “Blast 106” with her own show every Friday night between 7-9pm “Full on Fridays” playing the freshest tunes mixed together with anthems and getting listeners ready for the weekend.
This work led to her having an interest in club DJ’n. which is actually very different to radio. “Entertaining crowds, creating an atmosphere and seeing everyone party is just the best feeling in the world for me. It can be tough though in this male dominated industry to encourage people to believe in you but I’m determined to show that girls can do it too!”
In her DJ sets Kathryn blends together uplifting current club tracks, HipHop, RnB, disco and not forgetting a layer of classics. Her ever increasing popularity is ensuring that she now regularly plays some of the hottest venues across the province.
